Safe Access to Clean Drinking Water in Tanzania
Still to go
In Tanzania’s Kagera region, only a small portion of the population has access to clean and safe drinking water. This challenge is only set to grow with climate change. For many the only available sources are rivers or shared watering holes, leading to preventable diseases. We are determined to change this! Through our project we aim to filter local spring water, ensuring that everyone can drink safely and free from health concerns. Over the next three months we will be traveling to Tanzania to launch this initiative in partnership with Faraja Spring Water.
Johannes is the founder of Faraja Spring Water. He is a tireless advocate for accessible drinking water in the region. Together we aim to filter spring water and offer it at an affordable price to the local community. The spring is located just 70 meters from the filtration site and emerges from the rocks. The filtration facility itself is a small building situated a few kilometers north of Bukoba. Currently the spring water does not yet meet Tanzanian government quality standards, so filtration is essential.
Based on consultations with a water expert we know that we will need to install at least four filters to improve the water quality to acceptable standards. Additionally, infrastructure must be set up to transport the spring water to the facility for filtration. Once filtered, the water will be distributed to local shops and villages for further sale. This project will lay the foundation for a scalable model with a lasting impact. To ensure Faraja Spring Water can continue independently after our time in Tanzania, we will develop a clear maintenance manual for the filtration facility.
We are Stan Schmeitz, Niels van Lon, and Bas Mulder, three mechanical engineering students from Delft University of Technology, participating in the minor program in International Entrepreneurship and Development.
To make this project a success, we need your financial support. Our goal is to raise €4,000. Every euro will go directly into the project, with 100% of funds used to purchase filters and operationalize the filtration facility.
Budget Breakdown
- Filter Purchase: €2,200
- Operationalizing the Filtration Facility: €1,100
- Transport and Installation Costs: €700
We appreciate any form of financial contribution to support our project. Every donation allows us to expand our filtration capacity and improve the quality of life for people in the Kagera region. Together we can make a lasting impact!
