Promoting self-sufficient farming for Tanzanian farmers

Despite Tanzania’s rich soil and favourable conditions, many families still face hunger every year. One of the main reasons is the extended dry season, lasting from May to October, which makes traditional farming methods difficult. Our project focuses on equipping Tanzanian students and farmers with practical knowledge on drought-resistant farming techniques. By introducing these sustainable practices, we aim to improve food production and support the development of stronger, self-sufficient communities across Tanzania.
In partnership with the YEP-Tanzania foundation, we will spend three months working at a farm-school in Misungwi, Northern Tanzania. Our focus will be on improving the existing irrigation system to enhance farming conditions.
This project has two primary goals: solving a technical issue and making an impact on the local community. Technically, we aim to address the problem of clogged irrigation equipment by installing a water well. This will provide clean water for the farm’s irrigation system and ensure more reliable harvests. Additionally, the well will allow us to sell affordable clean water to surrounding communities, improving access to safe water.
On the community side, our goal is to support YEP-Tanzania’s mission of empowering underserved youth. YEP trains young Tanzanians to become entrepreneurs in agriculture, teaching them how to run their own farms. By involving them in our project and explaining the reasons behind each decision, we hope to help inspire the next generation of farmers in the region.
We are Tjalline (mechanical engineer), Maurits (social science and innovation), Max (mechanical engineering), and Maud (technical policy and management). We are a team within the minor International Entrepreneurship and Development at TU-Delft.
Our group has different academic backgrounds, giving us a mix of skills in both technical and social areas. This will help us succeed in Tanzania, not just with the technical side of things, but also by making a real difference for the people we are working with!
For our project to succeed, we need your financial support. We are targeting an amount of €5500. This money will be used to install the water well and with this supply the farm and the community of clean water. The students will gain knowledge on what is possible and see the value of investing in a water well. We would like to emphasize that all travel expenses and living costs are entirely borne by us. This means that 100% of the raised amount will be directly invested in the project.
The raised money will go towards the following investments:
- The drilling of the bore hole: €4500
- Infrastructure surrounding the water hole: €750
- Services and consultation: €250
