Dear reader,
We are Philip, Maartje, Onno, and Jesse, and in collaboration with the TU Delft, we are working with the Indonesia Biru Foundation (IBF). We will be working in Indonesia, specifically Lombok, to develop ecotourism in the Cemare Mangrove. Our goal is to create sustainable tourism infrastructure that not only attracts visitors but also raises awareness of the ecological challenges facing this insular ecosystem.
Mangroves are essential for coastal protection, marine biodiversity, and carbon storage. Furthermore, the health and extent of coral reefs are largely dependent on mangroves. Besides providing a myriad of benefits to the local ecosystem, mangroves also play an important role in the local economy of Lombok. Local fisheries are highly dependent on mangroves as mangrove habitat provides critical nursery grounds for juvenile fish.
Unfortunately, the mangroves in Indonesia are under serious threat. Waste accumulation, deforestation, and industrial expansion are taking their toll. Many mangrove forests are being cleared to make way for shrimp aquaculture industry. By making the Cemare mangrove an ecotourism hub, we can ensure that the mangrove will be saved from these destructive practices. We will create a protective framework that safeguards the mangrove's future.
Why do we need your help?
Developing ecotourism infrastructure requires funding to build proper facilities, such as eco-friendly walkways, viewing platforms, and educational centers. These will provide visitors with an immersive experience, allowing them to appreciate the beauty of the mangroves while learning about their importance and the current problem. Visitors will even be able to participate in conservation efforts, provided we develop waste management infrastructure. Additionally, we will organize Mangrove Connect, a cross-industry event where companies from across the country as well as local stakeholders will be invited to collaborate and engage.
